Who is Howie Day?
A native of Bangor, Maine, this 25 year old singer/songwriter is one of the most important musicians of his generation. He may be young, but Howie is a seasoned artist with almost a decade of relentless touring experience. Opening for acts such as the Dave Matthews Band, Tori Amos, Barenaked Ladies and Sting, for whom Howie admits that he was more nervous of String watching him perform than the 8,000 strong crowd in front of him.
Howie has played the guitar since he was 14 and the piano "for a lot longer than that". His guitar led to Howie achieving his ultimate goal of becoming a rock star - something he has been determined about since he was five.
Howie's passion and drive to suceed can be seen by his first album - Australia, which was written, recorded and entirely funded by Howie in 2001-2. Released under his own "Daze Records" label, the album took over a year to produce.
"The first record was, three songs, then I'd run out of money and have to go back out on the road for three months and then I'd comeback into the studio and record another two songs then I'd go away for three months, so the first one took over a year to complete."
His patience paid off, and not long after the release of Australia Howie was signed to Epic in the summer of 2002. Epic re-released Australia with a few enhancements to finished album and gave Howie the exposure he needed to grow as an artist.
After several years on the road, sometimes clocking up an astounding 300 gigs a year, Howie moved to London for three months to record Stop All The World Now at Olympic Studios in Barnes. It was a very different experience for Howie, "the last one was done in peices...this one was recorded all at once...I think it's a pretty good snapshot of Howie in 2003..."
With that Howie was back on the road again, this time bringing his band out with him to promote his new album. The break away success of "Collide" took everyone by suprise - no more so than Howie himself "we were just winding down..." The realisation of Howie's dream really struck when he was sat in a hotel room alone watching te 2005 NBA finals when "Collide" came on the TV whilst they were playing the seasons highlights to over 70 million viewers. "That's when I realised that was me - my song..."
Howie is currently writing and recording songs for his next album.
